Question: I just got a shiny new wireless mouse and keyboard. It comes with a lot of software, but I had a friend tell me I don't need any of it. Since it's wireless wouldn't I need to install the software to make it work?
Answer: Nope - not at all!
With wireless devices, all the complex stuff takes place between the human interface units (that's geek for "keyboard and mouse") and the receiver.
To the computer, your receiver "looks" like a regular mouse and keyboard. You should never need to install software in order to use a wireless mouse or keyboard. If you're having trouble getting it to work, it may be a connection problem. Here's a recent tip about that:

That said, your new hardware might have a lot of really cool features that you just can't use without the software. So, although the keyboard and mouse will do all the basic keyboard and mouse tricks (type numbers, letters, put spaces between words, move cursors, click stuff, etc), it may not do everything it says it will do on the box without installing the software.
So, it's your call. I personally run without the software first and see how it goes. If it's doing everything I'd ever want, why throw on the extra software?
